One highly effective method for chemical free bed bug control is the thermal heat control process.  The electric heat-treating equipment uses high levels of heat to kill bed bugs and their eggs.  The treatment uses temperatures between 120-135ºF., the temperature necessary to penetrate into the cavities.  There are numerous studies documenting that bed bugs die within 15 minutes and eggs are killed within 60 minutes at temperatures above 113ºF.  The heat is forced deep into mattresses, bedding, beds, wall cavities, furniture and other places infested by bed bugs. It is a safe and non-toxic treatment.  Several companies specialize in the thermal heat process and can be found on the Internet.

To kill bed bugs on your own, you can use a steamer that is 120ºF.  To intensify the heat vapors, wrap a towel around the brush head.  The most effective steamers are low moisture ones with large brush heads.   Avoid using the steamer on finished wood or other objects that can be damaged by high levels of direct heat.

An easy chemical free treatment for infested clothing, bedding or rugs is to wash and dry them at the highest setting.  The high temperature of dryers kills bed bugs and their eggs.  Shoes and backpacks can be placed only in the dryer for quick elimination of bed bugs.

There are numerous chemical free sprays for bed bugs and their eggs.  They use non-toxic substances that are sprayed directly onto areas infested by bed bugs.  These sprays kill bed bugs on contact and can be applied multiple times without leaving any pesticide residue.  These sprays are most effective when sprayed directly on bed bug clusters. Most are safe to use around children and pets.
