Contemporary Vs. Traditional Area Rugs

With the home décor market rife with innumerable choices when it comes to rugs, how can you make sure what you’re buying is really a style that defines your home? Because décor choices are an extension of your personal style, all of us want something truly unique. Let’s take the example of rugs, how can you choose between contemporary and traditional area rugs?

Contemporary area rugs are often found in bold colors, even black, and are well matched for a home that has unique décor in place, such as shabby chic or art nouveau. These rugs have patterns that are completely different from those found in traditional rugs. For example: black and white rugs in paisley patterns, rugs with huge polka dots or swirls etc. It is very easy to spot a contemporary rug because of the eye catching designs.

Traditional area rugs are more expensive than contemporary rugs, because they are considered as pieces of art. They are found in historical designs with stunning patterns and color combinations, often in rich materials such as silk or a combination of pure wool and silk. Traditional rugs are often hand woven and encompass the art of master crafters across the globe. Patterns in traditional rugs vary depending on the country they are sourced from.

While contemporary rugs are available in a variety of interesting colors, traditional rugs are available only in colors like red, beige, yellow, and blue. They have the ability to make any room appear more regal, like something out of a 1960s movie.

You can find mass produced traditional area rugs in a lot of stores, however, these will be machine made and the patterns will not be half as beautiful when compared to hand woven rugs. They are a good buy though if budget is a consideration since most hand crafted rugs cost thousands of dollars.
