Tips For Quitting Drinking Alcohol

The key to quitting alcohol is to make a decision, take action, and follow through with that action consistently.  Traditional recovery programs generally break this down into a series of steps, such as in the 12 step program of AA.  However, the real key is not so much in the steps themselves, but more in the disciplined action and the momentum of creating positive change in your life.  Consistency and taking massive action are key.  There are no real secrets in overcoming addiction, other than hard work.

If you want to know how to drink no alcohol anymore, here is a loose guide you might follow:

* Stick to total abstinence, rather than trying to simply cut down.  If you shake when you go too long without alcohol, consider getting medical help in order to get detoxified.  Moderation generally does not work well for most alcohol problems.

* If abstinence fails and you end up relapsing back to alcohol, then you probably need more help.  You could try again on your own, but if you continuously fail, then eventually you must break through your denial and realize that you cannot fix this problem by yourself.  Thus it is time to ask for help.

* You can give up alcohol by getting help in a number of different ways.  You might start with the least drastic if you don’t think your problem is too severe.  For example, you could use any of these forms of treatment…note that they get progressively more intensive as you go down the list:

1) Counseling session once a week.

2) Outpatient therapy groups.

3) Inpatient rehab, like for 28 days or less.

4) Long term rehab, living in treatment for over a month and possibly for over a year.

So start by asking for help and pursuing one of these options, or something similar.  If it works for you, that is great.  If it does not, then maybe move further down the list on your next try.
